Newberry National Volcanic Monument July 14, 2015

Cristina: Lead Ranger of national monument.
The days adventure took place at the Newberry National Monument which has existed for 40 years. Due to the fact that it's monumental land, it is absolutely illegal to take anything as small as an acorn to a simple rock from the property. The volcano is the largest in the cascade and encompasses 54,822 acres. The lava rocks that surround the area are identified to be basalt. The Newberry Monument was established to preserve and protect extraordinary volcanic landforms. Newberry volcano erupted 400,000 years ago which created 430 cylinder cones. Although there is still a high risk of an eruption, in all, the day ended with a mile walk in a dark lava cave of 42°, tripping over my walking stick and falling flat on the ground. I would say it was definitely a day well spent for People of Big River 2015! Survival is key!
